Dog food Allergies?

I noticed lately that my black lab has a few problems. She had a slight rash on her stomach, but I think it's gone now. She also got her hot spots back. She had them months ago, and I took care of them and they healed up. In a few places she's got very small round patches of fur missing. Like the size of a small fingernail. It's not too bad. In fact, I didn't even notice until I gave her a bath last Monday. I just gave her another REALLY GOOD scrubbing, and got all the loose hair off her legs that I could. (Maybe her legs are itchy and irritated b/c all the shedding hair stuck under there and pickin' at her legs? Her hair is REALLY short and picky) But I was wondering if it might be food allergies. Her ears also get really oily. Why might that be? She always acts like her ears bother her, but her ear canals are spotless, and the outer ear barely gets dirty. She was on Authority, but I switched her to Chicken Soup last Thursday.

It is best to make sure it is in fact allergies and not something else that is causing the problems.

If it is only food allergies an improvement should be noticed in a couple of weeks after the switch but some dogs have inhalant allergies so changing the food may not be enough. Benedryl can help alleviate the symptoms of allergies, dosage is 1 mg per pound, but if the dog is over 44 lbs just give it 2 tablets. I suggest taking the dog to the vet so they can either help you manage the allergies or run test to find out what if any allergies the dog has.

You should feed dog food such as Solid Gold Holistic Blendz, California Natural Herring %26amp; Sweet Potato or Wellness Simple Duck. All of these are great for a dog with food allergies and do not usually cause problems. Also when you have a dog with food allergies you have to watch the type of treats you give because even a couple of small treats can cause the dog problems if the treats have ingredients in them the dog is allergic to.

Here are a few links about allergies:

My dog had all the same problems you are describing so I am inclined to think it is allergies.

Chicken soup as in what humans eat? No, not a good food for a dog, except as an occasional extra if it is all home-made. If it is tinned, forget it.

You shouldn't be bathing her that frequently. If she has dry/itchy skin you are compounding the error by bathing her every week. Give her skin some time to recover.

Try adding some salmon oil to her food - just a couple squirts will do.

Stop bathing your dog - let her be. Treat only the hot spots with some tea tree oil and add some salmon oil to her food.

My bichon frise at about the age of 6 months started chewing the fur off his legs. Infact he cleaned all the fur off one leg. So after speaking to the breeder that I bought him from I changed his diet to fresh vegetables and macaroni a small portion of fresh cooked chicken, he was also given bottled water. After a few days he stopped chewing and the fur eventually grew back. Also try some tea tree cream on hot spots and any rashes. Last but not least make sure when you bath him that he is totally rinised clear of all traces of shampoo. Other than that take him to the vet

This is not allergies- The signs point to mange. This is hair loss on a dogs body and is fatal if immediant treatment does not ocurr. Take it to your local vet and hurry

With the spots of missing fur and the ear problems, it sounds like mites or another parasite. It may not have anything to do with the change of food. Poor baby, get her to the vet!

Dog food Allergies?

Yes, dogs can %26amp; do get food allergies. But if she had some of these before, it may not be food allergies. Hot spots are usually caused by bug bites like fleas. Have you treated her for fleas? Also, whenever you are changing dog foods, it's recommended that you do it a little at a time. For example, 3/4 of her old food mixed 1/4 new for a few days, then half %26amp; half for a few days etc. This can lessen the chance for allergies.

I would recommend that she be treated for fleas %26amp; taken to see her vet to treat the hot spots.

Take her to the vet. It sounds like mange to me, but she might also be having some allergies. Most dogs have allergies to corn, wheat, and sometimes chicken. Chicken Soup for the Dog lovers' soul (I'm assuming that's what you mean that you feed) is not a terrible food, but I don't feed it. I avoid giving my dogs any product with allergens in them. Symptoms of allergies include itchy ears, licking/chewing paws, hair loss, and having gas. Also allergies are seasonal for most dogs so they get worse this time of year.

Dog food Allergies?

I don't know.. when I read your info,, I don't think food allergy.. I lean towards mange, or even the fleas that you have been treating her for.....

You should take her to a vet and get the skin scraped.. You don't want her tearing herself apart, things will only get worse.
