We are planning on adding another dog to the family. We are looking for one who is a medium to large

with short hair and a sweet temperment. (No Dobies, German Shepherds, Rotties or Bulldogs -- I am afraid of all of those breeds. Also, no Greyhounds -- too high maintenance.) What would you recommend?

We have had a WIDE range of animals, training and running kennels for different vets. Greyhounds are by far the most LOW maintence dog that I have ever run across! I have a daschound, basset hound, german shepard and a greyhound. I tell you I would trade all of them in for another greyhound.

I would suggest you go to a local adoption shelter, or to a local pet store and just spend some time with different breeds. Not really looking for the specfic dog, but just checking out the different breeds that are out there. That is how we fell in love with our grey. We were at a local pet smart and the rescue group was there we ended spending the whole day with several of the dogs and we got hooked. Mind you we did not adopt any that we actually spent time with that day, we worked on finding one that fit in with our home. But we did decide that was the breed we wanted. Good luck I hope that checking out different places and groups will help you out!

My Labrador Retriever is the most wonderful dog-- extremely tolerant of my 4 year old and 2 very snotty cats. Easily trained--he is a perfect gentleman in the house and hasn't had an accident since he was a tiny puppy (which was my fault). Loves his people and offers us some security at home as well. Short, thick hair. Loves people, but wouldn't hesitate to defend his family. He's big, but not too big.

Hound dog they are more laid back and loyal, basset hounds are good and they are very sweet and so cute when they are puppies

I own Weimaraners and they are a wonderful breed - but if you're family is not active I wouldn't consider one. Try researching different breeds at www.akc.org.

I have two boxers and they are the most loyal, loving, and fun dogs I have ever owned. They require a lot of attention though so it is best if they are not confined to the backyard all the time.

I have a Goldendoodle which is a cross between a golden retriever and a standard poodle and she is amazing! Extremely smart and you can keep the hair at whatever length you like. They don't shed either because of the poodle curls but you do have to brush them regularly. Seriously this is the smartest most lovable dog I have ever had. But this is a type of dog that must be excercised regularly and is certainly a family dog. Mine always wants to be where the people are. I think she thinks she is a human. But if you want a very easy to train smart and lovable dog that will swim and run with you and doesn't shed; goldendoodles are the way to go! I always get compliments on how beautiful she is.

Other good medium to large size dogs I have had have been shelties, corgis, blue heeler, australian shepherd, and huskies (if you live in cold climate this is a great dog too)!

Get a Labrador Retriever (short hair) not the Golden Retriver.

Labrador Retrievers are very friendly especially with kids. Also they are very faithfull.

As long as you have the space to keep him/her or where to take them for walks I say Labrador Retriever 100%

Get a boxer. They are wonderful dogs. Exactly what you sadi is what we went through deciding what to get. We have 2 small dogs, and we rescued a 10 month old boxer. He has the best personality. They are easy to care for. They are super hyper, so they need to be walked or let out in a fenced yard alot, but they are sweeties. I have known MANY boxers, and I haven't met a mean one yet. :)

Labradors are a good breed can be a bit stubborn at first but with some training turn out really nice. actually don't be prejudice against a nice looking mutt or a mixed breed they usually turn out the best. with the least amount of problems.

get a lab-they are easy to train and get along with other animals and people. Golden retrievers are good too but they need a lot of attention and don't like to share their owners they also need regular brushing. checkout the shelters they usually have great dogs that desperately need homes

No experience with a greyhound?? VERY low maintenance dog.

I thought I had better add my bit for greyhounds everywhere...greyhounds are the sweetest, most well mannered breed of dog I have ever come across. Labradors are VERY high maintenance, greyhounds on the other hand are not. Greyhounds do not need a high amount of exercise (mine gets 30 min walk per day) and they sleep...a lot. They are actually very low key dogs, although you can get greys that are more active - most are not highly active. I would highly recommend reading up on this most wonderful dog breed and perhaps try to dispell the common myths that surround them.
