When can I bath my dog after having her pups?

I have a schnauzer and she had pups on Sunday 5-7. Her bottom coat is all matted where the pups are drinking milk. I just want to bathe her and brush her hair. Just want to know when I can do that.

My opinion would be to cut the mats off. Keep in mind that when you bathe a dog that has nusing pups the pups can ingest chemicals in the shampoo by nursing. Also, pups find their mothers teat by smell, if you wash this area with soap there is a good chance it will make it very difficult for the pups to find a teat so that is why I recommend just clipping the mats off. Also, if you clip the mats off it can't matt up again;). When in doubt call your vet or even another Schnauzer breeder or Schnauzer club person;).

Edited to mention: The smell they are looking for comes from the mothers saliva. Smell is the only sensory "thing" that functions right now. Their eyes and ears are sealed still. I wouldn't give her a full bath until the eyes have opened, IMHO.

DON'T do it until the pups are about 4-5 weeks and only bathe her in a baby shampoo you can wipe her down with baby wipes though...

just fill the bath up enough to let her bottom soak, use water only that will do the job for the mean time, thats what i did wif my dog

You can bathe her, but not with soap. I bottle feed my sons puppy from the time it was 1week old. He got a nasty skin infection from his mother. I took him to the vet and they sold me a bottle of Hypoallergenic dog wash it is called:efa hylyte. You can only get it at a vet's office. I also used it on his lactating mother and all the pups were just fine.

Yes, you can bathe her. It is healthier to have a clean mom, rather then be exposed to 'mess'.

The best time is when the puppies have just nursed, and have fallen back to sleep, as they should nurse every two hours. Then you will have 2 hours to get her dry. I would wait on the brushing if it takes longer than that. Perhaps allowing her to nurse, and then continuing.

Be sure and leave the heating pad in the whelping box and put your receiving blanket over the whelping box to hold in the heat. Chilling is number one cause for newborn fatality. Don't let mom get chilled during the bath. Blow dry her thoroughly. She will probably be nervous and upset to be taken away from her babies and very anxious to return to them, but you need to be sure mom is thoroughly dry before returning her to her babies, so pay this no attention.

Be sure to use a mild shampoo, such as baby shampoo or Castile or Nutrogena is the best. Rinse it thoroughly.
