Yorkies, although they have long hair, do not shed. You can determine how long you want the coat based upon the time that you want to commit to grooming.

Our yorkie is about 4 lbs full grown (you don't want them any smaller than that because you end up stepping on them when they sneak up around your feet) and she is still small enough to carry around and fit under the seat in airplanes.

We keep her hair long on top (so that she can wear a bow) and the rest of her coat to about knee level. We take her to the groomers once a month to have a trim. Many yorkie owners keep them "puppy cut" which is shorter hair so that you don't have to brush them and wrap their hair so that it doesn't get in their food or all tangled. We compromise between the show coat and the puppy cut.

Teacup poodles are ideal - they don't shed, they have wonderful personalities %26amp; are small enough that you can carry them around as do the celebs. Not to mention, they really are just as cute as they can be! My friend had one that lived for 11 years - pretty good for a dog.

There is no dog that doesn't totally not shed but here are a few small breeds that you might like that shed very little:

Cairn terrier

Cockapoo

Hairless Khala

Toy Poodle

and my favorite because I own one

Wirehaired Fox Terrier.....but he's too big to carry around in a purse but they are very loyal and loving dogs who love to chase cats and rabbits basically anything that moves.

Hope this helps!

Get a Tibetian Spaniel. They are VERY rare dogs, there are only one or two breeders in the US, but they are the perfect dogs. Every thing you are asking for and more. There is a wonderful breeder in Stockton, California. I can't find the number but look on the website. tibbies.net.

They have info on rescuing as well, you should consider getting an adult.

A minature dachschund - short-hair or wire-hair. Not sure if the long-hair ones shed. And they are VERY cute!

cockapoos-they don't shed, are usually around 16lbs and very adorable

miniature dachshunds do not shed much, they are small and remain that way, and come in a variety of colors and coat textures.

I would not, however, advise trying to carry one in a bag. Any self respecting dachshund would pee all over any one who attempted such a thing.

A Jack Russell Terrior/ Chihuahua is like the best dog ever. I have one and he is really smart and oh so cute!! he is a very loving dog and everyone who meets him falls in love with him. He has a long smooth coat and is pretty easy to take care of. If you raise it well from when he is a puppy than he we'll be an awsome dog. I let my dog walk around with out a leash and i just have to call him once and he comes to me. Most of the time he just walks right next to me! all in all a great dog!!

Poodle, Maltese, Yorkie, Silky Terrier

Some kids want toy dogs to dress up like a doll or to show off the way they see famous people doing on TV. You should really have a better reason than wanting an ornament to show off before you get a dog. You may get bored with the dog and then who will be the one taking care of it?

Dogs can be expensive to buy and take care of. A pup can cost $1000 or more. Puppy shots are another $200, then $100 a year. Annual Heartworm test and preventative medication $100. Professional trainer $600 and up. Going on vacation? Boarding kennel $40/day.

Spaying? $250.

Dogs are terrific companions but they require training and discipline and exercise. A dog the size of a Yorkie has to go out every four to six hours - the smaller the dog, the more often they have to go out. They can live 12 -14 years - what happens if you go away to college?

Toy dogs can be great dogs, but they can also be yappy, nippy, dominant little horrors that never get housebroken. If the dog bites one of your friends, you could be sued. You need to let them walk on all fours and train them just like any other dog.

You could get a rabbit or a guinea pig - they're friendly, easy to keep, don't bark, can live in a cage, and don't have to be walked or trained.

Can't go wrong with a Maltesse. Check this link. Will give you some detailed info on the breed. http://www.dogbreedinfo.com/maltese.htm

Dogs aren't accessories. Do you have the money to care for it if it develops a problem? Toy dogs are particularly prone to very very expensive problems. Knees can cost thousands of dollars to fix. Teeth cleanings will cost you hundreds of dollars a year. If you don't do it, your dog will die. Do you have enough cash to be able to keep up with an emergency? Or will you just throw him away like Paris did with hers?

So many people got these dogs and then found out they didn't like the crapping and peeing in the house - are you ok with that? They gave them away or killed them - why not try to get a rescue? This way the dog will have a place if you finish with him before he is done with life - they make you sign contracts to return the dog to them.

If you just have to have an accessory dog - at least use a reputable breeder. Too many out there are just looking for money and are selling broken down dogs with poor health and genetics.
