Help, how to properly wash a Dog?

He is about 7 months old.. so he's a big boy now. He is molting a lot... so there is my first clue that Im not bathing him right. Or so a friend told me. to give him a healthy coat, do I need to feed him vitamins? or use some kind of a good brush and shampoo... its cold here in Michigan so I can not wash him outside.... whats the best way in the bathroom... shower head or in a tub or both. what is the best affective way to dry him... he shakes all over... i know this is normal. I heard I should brush him while drying him too... to get rid of any of more loose hair he might have. any feedback is appreciated. thanks!

lol. It's called shedding, not molting. Birds molt, dogs shed. And just because the dog sheds a lot does not mean that it needs a bath. Most dogs shed to get rid of their heavy coat, some dogs shed year round. It really depends on the dogs lifestyle.

I give my dogs baths in the tub with a shower nozzle that comes all the way down and it only runs water when I need it. You can get one at a local store.

Use dog shampoo, not people shampoo. It's more formulated for their fur. To dry him, get a couple of towels and rubs him down really good before you let him out of the bathroom. He wills till be damp, so keep him inside until he drys out. You do not need to brush him while he dries, but it wont hurt either.

Good luck!

Dogs shedding is pretty normal and doesn't usually have to do with you bathing him or not. If you want to do it in your bath tub i suggest getting a hair catcher for your drain first or you might plug up your pipes. I use the shower head with warm water. Make sure it's not too hot though. Get the dog wet, use a good shampoo, and make sure to rinse very well. Dogs coats are much harder to rinse then human hair. Once the dog is bathed then dry it with towels. I use a hair dryer on my dog if it's cold out but she's used to it. It may scare your dog if it's the first time. Also, I like to talk to my dog and tell her what a good dog she is while I'm bathing her trying to reassure her that it's OK.

First brush him good before you bath him. I bath mine inside in the tub. Shower head will work but I have a hose that attaches to the faucet and has like a shower head on the other end. You can buy them at the hardware stores. Make sure you get all the soap out. I use a hair dryer on mine but don't hold it too close and keep it moving so it don't Burn your dog. Also important is use dog shampoo not human type.

There are you wash your own dog, doggy washes. They provide everything you need and clean up the mess. Our local Petco has a you wash area where they provide soap, a blower and towels. Other places provide clippers, toe nail clippers, brushes, etc. Check the yellow pages or google to see if your town has one.

Dogs who live in air conditioned and heated homes tend to shed year around although they do big molts during the change of season. Unless your dog is actually losing hair which could be from anything including stress or poor nutrition, it is quite normal.

The best thing is to have a large enough shower with a handheld shower head and a glass door. That way he can't go through a curtain. Baths are good for soaking but not cleaning.

The fastest way to dry him is with a bunch of dry towels and a blow drier. The towels do a better job of drying than a brush does. When it gets damp, just use a new one. When he is almost dry, you can use a brush just to finish.

Here is a step by step procedure including a list of materials.

It helps to know what breed it is, makes a big difference in products used and frequency of bathing, etc. I'm guessing this is a short haired breed. As far as bathing at home, I use a tub and a hand held shower sprayer. Make sure you use a good quality pet shampoo- oatmeal and aloe will help dry skin and rinse the coat until the water runs clear and then rinse for 5 more minutes. Have several towels ready and dry him as best as possible- I use a a crate at home and put our big guy in there and let him air dry (keep him away from drafts).

To help get rid of the loose hair I suggest a Zoom Groom to use during bathing and a shedding blade to use in between bathing. Our big guy likes to be vaccumed with the hose attachment, which is a big help.

Fish oil supplement can assist with a nice coat, but the most important part of their coat starts with a high quality diet.

Owners of small dogs have an advantage: they can just plop the dog in a sink or laundry tub. But if you can't fit your dog in a sink, use the bathtub, or get in the shower with her and use a detachable nozzle. A portable doggie tub is also an option. While some tubs are made of heavy plastic, others are collapsible and can easily be used outside or in the laundry room or mudroom
