Yes they can have hypothyroidism which some of the classic signs are bald patches, all over thinning of the coat and yes a weight gain.Have you had the T4 tested as well as the TSH(thyroid stimulating hormone) or a T3. They should still do a full profile to see if there are any other metabolic changes as she is 10 years old. In most cases they can start her on thyroid meds like synthroid to regulate her thyroid and in some cases they may want to do radiation therapy if the thyroid glands are huge or remove them all together and keep her/him on the meds. Many dogs and cats can have issues with their thyroid glands like humans and they do amazing on the medication. You will need to start him/her on the meds and then after one month re-test her thyroid levels to make sure you have her on the lowest dose possible but still regulate her nicely then it is bi-annual testing after that. Good Luck!!

in dogs it is more common to have an under active thyroid than an over active but it is definately possible. my cat takes a medication called Tapazole (methimazole is the drug name) for his over active thyroid. check with you vet because there are medications to regulate her thyroid so her skins not so bad. try another vet when all else fails, sometimes a fresh set of ideas is a good idea.

Dogs like humans can have hyper or hypo thyroid issues. Typically this can be treated with a pill daily. A simple blood test should be able to diagnose your dog.

My lab/chow had this problem. She got shots directly to the site on a regular basis.
