Benadryl for dog allergies. Does it work and dosage?

I have a female Labrador that has seasonal allergies and during the spring scratches alot. She also loses hair on her back and behind the ears and skin looks irritated. We have treated her with a shot from the vet but it only works for a few weeks. So will 25mg of Benadryl help? Also and most importantly what kind of dosage of the 25mg should I use in a day for a 60-65lbs female lab.

My dog suffers from allergies and we give him one tab in the am and one in the pm he doe pretty good and weighs the same as your lab. Also if she has skin issues with her allergies bathe her weekly in head and shoulders shampoo to help soothe and heal the irritated skin. I am a professional pet groomer and Head and Shoulders truely is above the rest.

I would try half a tab and see if that works, if not a whole tab is probably OK, but there is also probably better info on the web.

The general rule is 1 mg per lb. Have you asked your vet about chlorpheniramine, hydroxizine, or clemastine? Have they been giving your pup diphenhydramine? It's the same as Benadryl. Just give 'em a call! Ask them what each medicine does.

I have used the kids benadryl for my dogs and dose according to the weight of the dog -- so if a 70 pound kid takes 25 mg, that's what I give to the dog. I haven't used it long term, tho --just for occasional itchy periods.

It does work but the dose is weight dependent so you should check with the vet to make sure you get the dose right.

I've also started having a groomer come once a month for a full bath to get pollens out of his coat (next year I might do this every two weeks during allergy season). This has helped a lot.

I also switched his food to California Natural which is hypoallergenic since he seems to have food allergies too.

By doing those two things, I've been able to drop the benadryl.

The dosage for Benedryl in dogs is 2-4mg/kg (divide lbs by 2.2 to get kg). Try the Benedryl first, you can give it up to 3 times per day at maximum dose. If it doesn't work, switch to Claritin 10mg tabs (1 to 1.5 tabs once a day for your dog's size).

Antihistamines can work wonders, and shame shame SHAME on your vet for allowing you to depend on steroid injections to control your dog's allergies, without educating you on the alternatives.

Bathing your pet is also a good idea, twice a week is best while she experiences severe symptoms. New research is showing that 40% or more of our allergic response is caused by absorption of allergens through the skin, so the more you keep those allergens off the better off she'll be. Finding a good quality shampoo that will help soothe her skin will probably make her very happy :)

My vet tells me I can give my 50lb Aussie as much as 50mg of Benedryl for allergy treatments. It is, however, not a good solution for significant allergies (such as ones that would cause reactions so intense as to produce hair loss). It will also make your dog lethargic, so may not be a good all around solution.

Ask your vet about alternative treatments to over-the-counter meds. It will benefit your dog in the long run.

The vet just told us to use two 80 mg dosages for an 80+lb dog 4-6 hours apart for a snake bite. She slept all the time, but it did take down the swelling. He said it was a huge dose, but it would work and it did. She had no ill effects, so it must be a safe drug in relatively high dosages.

Hello.. 1/2 mg per lb every 8 hours ..up to 2 mgs per lb..it comes in pills %26amp; liquid, best way to get any meds down, if he gives you hard time is peanut butter works for dogs %26amp; cats ;) good luck %26amp; take care :) Hmmm wonders which Head %26amp; Shoulders, there's only some 10 different kinds !?!

60lbs you can give two. - Funny I just had to go restock on Benedryl for the dogs. If two doesn't work she may need a cortisone shot. I hjave one that would need one once a year. It was seasonal allergies to something outside and I could maintain it with benedryl until fall then he went silly and I have to take him once a year.

I cut one in half and add the powder to my dogs breakfast.

He is a 18 pound pug with awful allergies.

The vet put him on Benadryl and it doesn't make him sleepy at all.

Good Luck!

Depends on the allergy.. Benedryl might help it might now.. Depends on what she is allergic to.. It's best to get the vet to diagnose the problem and then you can properly treat. Benedryl is just one allergy medication, there are many, some might be more effective for your dog.

MY VET TOLD ME TO US THE LIQUID. IT IS ADMIN. BY WEIGHT. ASK YOUR VET HOW MUCH YOU SHOULD GIVE YOU DOG. MY DOG IS A YORKIE, LESS THAT 8# SO HER DOSAGE WOULD BE CONSIDERABLY LESS THAN YOUR DOG. BE SAFE, ASK YOUR VET.

I had to give that to my dog when he got stung by a bee.... the emergency vet told me that it should be 1 lb per 1 mg. Check with your vet first tho...

I hope you dog gets better

Benadryl is safe for most dogs, call you vet and make sure that she's not allergic to anything in it and ask for dosages just to be safe:)

Why not just call the vet and ask them? Then you'll have an answer by a professional. He might be able to prescribe shampoo and or cream to help with the itching.

I wouldn't take dosages from anyone on this list unless you want to kill your dog. Why don't you get a Vet that can actually treat the allergies? Benedryl is a temporary fix at best.

Clemastine (brand name Tavist) works better in dogs and usually only has to be given twice a day. Our girls (Belgian Malinois and GSD/Chow mix) take 1 tablet (1.34 mg) morning and evening. Benadryl works for some dogs (didn't work well for my girls) but the dosage and frequency of dosing for a Labrador or other large breed might be impractical.

You can order generic clemastine on-line without prescription, however you will want to check with your Vet to see if this is OK. Generally clemastine is safe and has few side effects. Give it 10 days to 2 weeks to see the full benefit- though I have been told it only works for about 60-75% of dogs.

Also try eliminating corn and wheat from her diet. There are a number of corn and wheat free dog foods on the market. This helped our Malinois greatly as she is prone to both allergic dermatitis and hot spots. Her skin improved markedly within a week of eliminating corn.

Benadryl (generic name:diphenhydramine) can help with the dog's itching, but you should consult with your vet about any other medications that may help....corticosteriods like prednisone can help for a bit longer (not a long-term solution, but is ok for short time). Also, consider other irritants....removing other irritants may lessen your dog's threshold to the allergens. I once had a dog that was very allergic to the corn in his diet and once his diet was changed, many of his symptoms lessened. So consider her diet, shampoo, and grass (big allergen for some dogs!).....

Before we would give our dogs shots we would give them children's bendryl so they wouldn't have an allregic reation to the shot. So i wouldn't see why you couldn't give it to your dog to help with allergies. I would treat her with 1/2 of what a human child would get, but I'm no veterinarian so I would say call and ask how much and all that. Your local vet should volunteer this information.

Benadryl for dog allergies. Does it work and dosage?

per my vet, at dog that big CAN handle 1 pill. It works pretty well but you might have to look into cortisone shots/pills I have a lab mix that does that every time the seasons change. Good Luck.

Hi, here is a web site that will help you figure out the dosage. It may help. I have had dogs that it has helped %26amp; others that it hasn't. I am sure it will not hurt to try. http://animalsunlimited.net/meds.htm Good luck to you %26amp; your dog!!! An emergency vet once perscribed 25mg. 2 pills ( at one time) to be taken twice a day for a 65lb Doberman, due to a bee sting reaction.
