Is my dog too skinny?

I went to the vet when i adopted her and she is an outside breed so was told that her hair will keep her warm. But I can feel her ribs and backbone. Or is just a common thing to be able to feel on a malamute? She weighs 85 lbs and is very streamlined and gets exercise every day. I am the one losing weight! 10 lbs in the month I have had her. Thanks for all the answers tho I hate picking who is the best, ugh.

Your dog does much better lean than fate but you may need to fatten up your dog just a little. You want the definition between the fibs and the hind legs but not bones sticking out. Some malamutes weigh well over 100 pounds. Check with your vet again for the proper food for your dog.

i have been told that dogs ribs should be slightly showing (but ever so slightly) so no i wouldnt think that she's underweight

Pictures would be helpful here. Lots of folks think their pet is underweight as the average weight of humans and pets are rising. It is unusual to see a healthy weight pet! My mom thinks my dog is underweight and hassles me all the time about it. Where her dog is really the fatty! If you can see ribs then the dog is too skinny. But, with all that hair it would be hard to tell. I'd ask the vet and get a professional opinion. Different breeds have different weight requirements. A greyhound is going to look a lot skinnier than a husky ya know?

The average male Malamute ranges between 85-125 pounds.85 for a female sounds just fine. It's very easy info to find on the web. Hope that helps.

that is a decent weight for malamute, though a few extra pounds wouldn't hurt. males are much bigger though.

should be able to SLIGHTLY feel ribs.

they are very high energy as they have been bred to be workers. LOTS of exercise needed. yes, she is fine outside...15 below is no problem for her.

sizes mentioned by everyone here only applies if she is an alaskan malamute not a giant malamute (though it is unlikely that she is).

if you want more info on the breed (what it should be) check out the akc and ukc standards (http://www.the-kennel-club.org.uk and http://www.akc.org). check out http://www.dogbreedinfo.com. find local breeders and talk to them. also, try breeder websites and wikipedia.

I have a 16month old wolf hybrid. I too thought he was very skinny, but my vet assured me it's normal for that age. She said it's ok if you feel the bones, but you shouldn't be able to see them.

I would recommend that you ask your vet what is the ideal weight for a dog her size and they go from there. It may be that she is in such good shape that she is just burning off what you are feeding her. Your vet can let you know if you need to increase her food portions or not. Hope this helps.

Is my dog too skinny?

You SHOULD be able to feel her ribs EASILY. That's not a bad thing. But there should be a little fat covering. Not too much, but some is okay.

In colder weather, a dog will burn more calories, especially an outside dog. She will need the calories to keep warm. So for the winter you should probably increase her food a bit.

Can I borrow her for a few months. After i gave up smoking I've put three stones on and I have to lose them before I have an other Hart attack.

She is perfectly alright and vet surely would have advise you to increase the amount of food if that was necessary.

Is my dog too skinny?

I think that is a good weight for that breed as long as you are feeding her the right serveing size for her and the right amount of food then it doesn't matter how much she weighs Malamutes can weigh as much as 95 pound and your dog isn't to skinney the least it should ever weigh is 80 pounds though!!
