Weve built them a large dog house, put invisible fence wire down around the places we don't want them to dig, inside our privacy fence. We will still bring them in, in the evenings to sleep with us and spend time, but during daylight hours, we'd like them to spend more time outside. They (there's 4, two huskies and two mutts) are used to spending all day inside with me, but with a baby on the way, we'd like to keep the dog hair to a minimum. They all shed terribly bad (I burn out a vaccuum every 4- 6 months) and tend to get rowdy in the house. Most of this was fine (minus the rowdiness), until we found out the chances of the baby being asthmatic are in the high 90's.
In order to keep the house mostly hair free and safe for baby, this is the only alternative short of getting rid of them, which my husband and Idont want to do. When we let them out longer than potty time, they herd around the door or tear at the glass.
Any suggestions on how to keep them happy and safe out there?

As far as keeping them outside, do you live somewhere warm like Florida? Build a large dog run for them within the yard (You can get great 6x6 chain link panels at Home Depot that you clamp together - They have a door panel too).

Maybe some stuffed Kongs or a pool if they like them and the weather is good (you can get a plastic one for less than $10 at Wal-Mart). Also, try this stuff. I use it with my shepherds and they only shed when I take them off it so they can blow coat (you MUST take them off and allow them to blow coat once or twice a year depending on how often/when they would do it in your area). http://www.inflightcoatformula.com/ FYI I am not a distributor and I won't be paid for getting you to buy this. I just think it works really well and enjoy not having dog hair all over all the time. It brings coats in really full and thick but slows/stops excessive shedding. Takes very little to work and is easy to mix right into the dog's food.

My account will probably get deleted (reported FOR SURE) for suggesting you build a really LARGE dog house so they cn all fit inside and keep warm toghether because they are pack ANIMALS, (NOT humans).

But have you thought about maybe rehoming 3 of them or maybe all 4,your already stressing %26amp; your baby isnt here yet.
The baby is going to take up so much of your time i found it hard with one dog never mind four.Im not saying people with kids shoulnt have 4 dogs but already there getting chucked outside to make the house more pleasent for the baby.
Think about it very carefully,At the moment youve got to think whats best for your dogs.

They used to have both the house and the yard to live in and now their home has shrunk considerably especially if the yard is small. They are probably bored and upset by this negative turn of events so it will help to make the outside much more fun than the inside ever was.
I would leave all the best things for outside including food, treats, toys, time with the family, etc. You might even drive the point home by making the inside a place for baths, grooming, nail clipping and the like.
I would also increase their time walking in the neighborhood, going to parks, etc. even after the baby comes (you may have to hire some walkers) comes so they do not feel like things have gotten worse.
