How often should your brush your dog?

We have a lab mix, and she sheds a lot. Everytime we brush her, loads of hair comes out on the brush. Should we brush her everyday? Will this ruin her coat? And does brushing only remove the dead hair?

Every day is best. Brushing will only remove the loose/dead hair (unless you're brushing like some sort of maniac).

Regular brushing is good for the coat and skin.

A couple times a week for about 5-10 minutes.

You should continue brushing her every day. You're just removing loose hair, so there will be less hair in your house.

yea, brushing only removes the dead hair, lol. it doesnt pull out her hair. =] brush often especially during the summer months. they shed a lot during the first few months of summer, and anyways, all that hair has got to be hot. =[

My kids brush my labs everyday. It cuts down on the hair in the house. No it will not ruin the coat. Just like your hair it distributes the oils throughout the hair strand and stimulates the scalp to grow better hair.

you should brush her daily... to prvent any of her fur matting.. which will be easier for the groomer

I brush my lab every evening for about 10 minutes. I use a regular hair brush and besides cutting down on all the shedding and hair in my home. SHE LOVES IT!!

i brush min every other day, its been hot and that makes them shed more, try an undercoat brush, it works wonders!

You can probably get away with every other day. If you want to try every third day and see how it goes, it might be enough. A lab is less likely to need brushing every day as dogs like my pyrs.

Of course it depends on the breed. But I would say that brush her everyday. Summer months are the worst for shedding, so you may be able to cut back the brushing a bit during the winter.

You an control a lot of the shedding hair by "carding" her. Take a #40 clipper blade and brush her with that 1-2 times a week until you get the loose hair under control. Brushing everyday is fine as long as you are using a medium fine brush so you are not scratching the skin. If you brush just a couple of times a week then I would use a stiffer brush. Brushing removes the dead hair and you do want to make sure you are protecting the good hair by using a leave-in conditioner like ones formulated for small kids. I carded my lab twice a week for the 1st 2 weeks then I went down to just once a week and used the leave in and his coat was in excellent condition and his shedding was down to almost nothing. Always do a real good brushing before a bath to loosen up the dirt and hair.

Brush her a couple times a week when she's shedding most. I use a brush called a "Zoom Groom". They are made by Kong and are available at any pet store like petsmart and others. It really pulls the hair out of my dog and cats.

Brushing depends on the dog's coat. Our grandfather has an Alaska malamute and I brush his for at least an hour, because he has so much hair. Now, I have a Rhodesian Ridgeback and a Pittbull and I rarely brush them, because they have short hair and don't shed much. My fiance's parents have a golden retriever and she gets brushed everyday, because her hair gets knotty. Brushing them helps to keep the oils evenly spread over their skin and helps keep hair shiny. It also helps to keep them clean. Another tip, avoid feeding your dog food with corn in it. It dries out their coat and skin. It can be hard to find, so I try to get some with less corn. You can tell by looking at corn's position in the ingredient list- the closer it is to the top, the more corn it has.
