yeah it's good to have them separated but i think your border collie is probably bored and looking for a job..and probably gave herself the job to bark at the cats? Just my guess. i have a BC mix and read alot about how they need jobs, my BC will get fixated on things (like fixated on the same spots on his walk) if i dont practice his job (disc catching) with him enough

can't they learn to be friends? the dog probably wants to play, not be shut off in a corner. she probably also wants to be near you, like you mentioned. perhaps socializing the pets together will eventually lead to a friendship between them and then the dog won't have to be fenced off somewhere else.

A border collie is a social dog and will get pissed off if left alone, or feels like it is cooped up and missing the action somewhere else. You can stop the barking with a shock collar but that wont really make the dog any better. Id get rid of the stupid cats unless you have a mouse problem.

Dogs bark as a form of communication. If your dog barks, there is a reason why. It may be simply a response to a stimulus, like a jogger running by the house鈥攐r it may be your dog's way of asking for help.

Ongoing, Excessive Barking 鈥?This is your dog鈥檚 way of sending you a distress signal. Somewhere his needs as an animal are not being met. Is his world anchored by a pack leader who projects calm-assertive energy? Are you walking with him every day, which exercises his body and his mind? Is he living a balanced life? If nuisance barking is a problem, consider these issues to find a solution. It鈥檚 the best way to show real love for your dog.

Barking as Greeting - Some clients tell me that they love coming home because their dog greets them excitedly by jumping and barking. They feel this proves their dog's love for the family. But in a natural setting, dogs don鈥檛 bark, yelp, or jump on pack mates in a burst of affection. Dogs that greet their owners in this way are trying to communicate. But rather than professing undying love, they are probably trying to tell you that they are lonely and bored; their needs as a dog are not being met. The excitement is your dog鈥檚 way of burning off the excess energy that has been building throughout the day. Don't be disappointed by this revelation. Dogs simply don鈥檛 use emotions like people do. Remember, they鈥檙e dogs. To love a dog means you must treat him like an animal, which means fulfilling him as Nature intended him to be fulfilled.

Remember the Fulfillment Formula: Exercise, Discipline, and then Affection! Are you providing this for your dog?

i find it hard to think that cats stay in one part of the yard. our cats jump over the fence all the time. a BC needs more room to run around and play then a fenced off part of the yard. unless your cats are declawed the cats can take care of themselves against the dog if the dog decides to play with them. and if they are declawed they SHOULD NOT be outside at all even in their own back yard. other cats or animals could get in and hurt them and they cant defend themselves
