How can I teach my boyfriends dog to stay off the couch?

He's had this small little long hair ratterrier that's constantly chewing on herself (which is gross!) so even though we bathe her she'll still smell, and to make matters worse her bottom half is all nodded up into dread locks. And she loves to lay on top of the couches and pillows scratching %26amp; chewing, leaving this horrible smell behind we've tried everything from hitting her with the pillows to spaying water on her, to keeping her on litteraly a short leash as far away from those couches and pillows. Nothing seems to work can someone help me please!

first of all it sounds like the dog has a grooming issue, and the smell and chewing is an indication that something is bothering her...take her to a vet and make sure they do a skin test, have them groom her with medicated shampoo and buy Ecto-soothe 3X shampoo and never use over the counter junk..they only create skin problems...

after you help this problem...they perhaps she wont be so uncomfortable and smelly...also if there is a skin problem then you'll need to clean and vacuum the couch really well to ensure not to reinfect her from the couch...

come back at me and let me know what he vet does and says and then I 'll tell you the easiest, simplest way to cure the problem...you'll even laugh...so email me I will help you...

Get a small spray bottle with water,, everytime the dog attempts to get up spray in the face and say no and down..

Put pennies in an empty soda can (aluminum) and tape the top. Whenever she gets on the couch shake that can a few hard times. It'll scare her off the couch and she'll eventually learn :)

I think the better question to ask is why does she smell so bad? Thats not natural!!! She probably has a yeast infection on her body, that would also explain the itching. Usually this is caused from fleas or an allergy from food. Treat her with Advantage or Frontline (NO flea baths, flea collars, dip, or fake drops. They don't work and can KILL your pet). Something is wrong with the dog, they aren't supposed to stink like that. Maybe if you took it to the vet and got her skin fixed you wouldn't have to worry about her jumping on the couch. If all you and your boyfriend care about is getting her off the couch because she stinks you should find her a new home.

If she is used to being up on the couch then it will be hard and very time consuming to train her a conventional way, like you've been trying. I saw this product on the Internet a few months ago, I can't remember what it was called, but it was like a mat that you laid across your couch cushions. When the animal tries to jump up on the couch it makes a noise or kind of shocks them a little or something. It's supposed to make them scared to get on the couch. Maybe you could google it or something. It is probably sold at Pet Smart or a store like it. Sorry I couldn't be more help.

this is just plain neglect - its called cruelty to animals. she is all matted up because he is not grooming her or getting her done.

she smells from a skin infection %26amp; cheap food.

she obviously needs to see a vet ASAP! what is wrong with you people. what a shame for the dog

How much do you like your boyfriend? We all come with a price [or a prize] just depends on how much it's worth to you. In the big scope of life - if you really like/love this guy, does it really matter that he has this little ratter who lives on the couch? So what? Maybe before hitting her with pillows and such, try bathing her, slowly changing her diet so she doesdn't ooze from her pores, or take her to the Vet to see what's going on? Maybe she has allergies, an infection, etc.? If not, maybe the best thing for her and you if he can forgive you if he loves the dog, is finding her a new home. Good luck.

I've read all the answers and no one mentioned positive reinforcement! ):

Well, first of all, get your boyfriend to groom the dog so she won't have matted up fur. Maybe bring her to a vet to see why she smells so bad.

I watched this show where an animal trainer helped a family out in a similar situation.

Whenever the dog goes on the couch with you, simpy get up, go on the floor and call her so she comes. Make her want to come to YOU and leave the couch by herself. When she's on the floor praise her and give her treats. (:

Do this everytime she's on the couch with you. Just get up, go on the floor and call her until she jumps down and goes to you, then reward. Hopefully this will work!
