He is 6 yrs old. He is constantly scratching, licking, losing hair and also the ear problem. Help anyone?

blue powder ear wash

Note: The originator of this recipe is unknown. At this point it is a widely cited "folk remedy" which is highly effective in treating ear infections.

1 16 oz bottle of rubbing alcohol (pour off an inch to make some room)

8 to 16 drops Gentian violet (it's real cheap, but hard to find - try next to the Iodine at a Mom %26amp; Pop Pharmacy or ask someone to order it)

4 Tbs. Boric Acid Powder (also cheap and found at the pharmacy)

Shake well and for convenience transfer some to a small (4 ounce) "spout" bottle. Each time you use it, shake the bottle well to make sure the powder is in suspension.

The Gentian Violet will stain, so be careful where you mix it and where you apply it to the dog's ears.

If you're treating an infection, you want to clean the ears with this mixture on a daily basis. Otherwise from once a week to once a month is usually enough to keep the ears healthy.

The infection may be coming from ear mites and most over the counter medicines wont work. There is a medicine you will have to get through your vet called revolution. Its drops that are put on behind the neck and it will cure all his problems. I have found a great way to clean a dogs ears take old pure cotton tea shirts the ones that are white and real thin, cut the nail short on your index finger then put this cloth over your finger and gently wipe the inside of the ear if the wax is dark brown its ear mites.

If he smells bad, get him checked for a yeast infection.

An old dog had a similar problem.

Go see the vet he/she might have something a little stronger than over the counter stuff that will stop it.

Have you taken him to the vet? My dog who is a rot/chow mix had constant infections and finally after many surgeries they came to the conclusion the he had a chronic yeast infection in his ears. Have the vet check it out. After they diagnosed it they flushed his ears %26amp; put him on some meds and he has had no problems for over a year.

My dog does this too. The time I took her to the vet about it he said she has constant wax build up and gave me drops that helped but where expensive.

So what I do every other day is put 'nutri-vet ear cleanse' and you rub that into there ears for 2mins and it get all the wax out and then you clean out the excess wax with a tissue. Then I put o 'hydrocortison spray, itch relief' to sooth the itching, got this from walmart.

Plus and you have to be very careful occationally I put cotton ear puds down her ear (like what humans clean there ears out with) and this gets in the nooks and crannys and she loves it cos it itchs. I jsut put a bit of olive oil on the end cos thats good for breaking up ear wax too.

It is not very likely that a 6 year old dog has mites. It very well could be a yeast infection, but don't you think it is time to see the vet?????? I don't think putting crotch cream in the dogs ear is a good first choice. You really owe it to your dog to get it checked out. There are times when the infection is so bad and deep that oral antibiotics are needed. If that is the case, you have to see a vet!!!! It seems this has been going on for a while!!!!

He may have ear mites. You should take him to the vet and have it checked out. My golden lab had that and his ears stunk to high heaven!! He needed a special medicine to kill the little buggers and then we had to treat the mess they left behind. If it has been going on for a long time, it is not just and ear infection. The infection is the symptom of something else going on in there. Take him to the vet as soon as possible and let the professionals have a look. My dog suffered for over 6 months because of my delay when it could have been cleared up in a couple of weeks. Good luck!! DOGS RULE!!

almost always, over the counter medications are not going to help problems like this, you would have to go to the vet to get the proper medications... some medications from the store don't have correct ingredients and can actually make your dogs symptoms a lot worse! I recommend going to the vet... hope all goes well and good luck...

my dog also has constant ear infections and i used to buy medicine from the vet. but now its to expensive so i tried triple antibiotic ointment(for people). it really works. just put a finger nail size drop in the ear hole and rub his ear for a moment. do this everday when he has an infection only. no need when there is nothing to treat. you can get t.a.o. at any drug store.

what are you feeding him?? most ear infections are allergic reactions to the food they are on or are cause by a groomer leaving water in the dogs ears when bathing..

FOOD - avoid Soy, Beef, Pork, Wheat, by-products, MEAT MEAL, corn

get CHICKEN MEAL, TURKEY MEAL, or LAMB MEAL as first ingredient, RIce second... also make sure he isnt getting any treats with problem causing ingredients (pigs ears etc)

See your vet. He/she will be able to prescribe antibiotics that you can't get over the counter. Good Luck!

be a responsible dog owner and take him to the local vet as soon as you can

You need to take him to the vet! Before the infection gets any worse.

Remember to always dry their ears out after they get wet. Witch Hazel is good to wipe the dogs ear out, but don't do this until his ears have cleared up.

Only a vet can give you the correct meds for an ear infections. While you are clearing that up, check out what is being said on the web about vaccinations and durations of immunity. Your Rott is displaying classic symtoms of vaccinosis.
