My dog scratched too hard...?

my cairn terrier all of a sudden came out from underneath the bed-on his back had a large patch where he either scratched or rubbed-it caused his hair to come off and its blood raw-i put peroxide on it so it would not get infected-is this b/c of fleas or dry skin-any reconmendations besides going to the vet

Do not use anymore peroxide. It kills good as well as bad tissue. If this is not a hot spot, you can put antibiotic salve on the wound. Put either a shirt or a pair of pants, with the tail cut out, on him to keep him from licking it off. If there is any sign of infection, get him to the vet.

It's most likely a hot spot.

I think you should keep on doing what you are doing, but you really should ask a vet for a better explanation.

I would see a vet.

I've used Sulfodine with success. It's inexpensive and can be found in almost any pet aisle.

Make sure he has no fleas, ticks ect..., then you can use antibiotic ointment.

They pest shops also sell a great shampoo for dogs with dry skin.

Hot spots, injury, fleas, allergies (scratching), they all need a vets attention. If you try to treat this yourself remember one thing: any thing you put on it, if he can reach it he will lick it off, ingesting it. be real careful or you can make him ill on top of having a sore.
