How do i get my dog to stop jumping when she's not supposed to?

When the doorbell rings, she runs straight towards the door and starts jumping all around which leads to scratches all over the wood doors. Also, when guests come inside the house, she constantly jumps on them and barks at them. Also, while we're eating, she'll jump on us and push us and sometimes just sit there and stare at us. Any advice?

Also- She's a cavalier king charles spaniel and she sheds way to much. If she fell asleep on you before, it seems like it snowed on your pants. There is hair everywhere in the house and we don't know what to do.

Thanks in advance.

Teach her commands. Take back your Alpha Position... .. then when she is jumping say SIT of DOWN.. by giving her a command to do (her job is no longer greeting people).. it is obeying you as you are her Alpha.

For the shedding get a good vacuum that takes care of dog hairs.. I have a Filter Queen and it has a power nozzel which is good for clothes, furniture and steps and the dog hair just disappears... I have German Shepherds and they shed also. Search Ebay for some good prices on them... but be sure to get the power nozzle too.

Good Luck

Kill it

you can keep a leash on her and shorten it by stepping on it and holding her down when someone comes to the door, you can get a barking collar to help with the barking, or you can train her with a shock collar.

As to the grooming - is she on a top quality dog food? If not, change her food (gradually) - that will help. The other thing you need to do is brush her thoroughly a couple of times a week. She's likely still shedding. You can also add about 1 teaspoon of either olive or vegetable oil to her food daily to keep her skin and coat in great condition. (Regular brushing and good diet is key!)

As to the jumping, does this dog have any kind of training at all? She needs to be getting some obedience training.

To get her to stop jumping she MUST know sit. Since this dog seems to be totally out of control, you should start this exercise with her on a leash. When someone rings the doorbell, put her in a sit stay. The people coming in are to totally ignore her - no talking, petting, no eye contact.

As soon as she's sitting, you need to praise and treat her immediately. You have to be very consistent and since she's been allowed to get away with this behaviour, it's going to take some time to teach her. So be patient, but very, very consistent.

When she jumps on you, same thing - first turn your back on her, tell her to sit - praise and treat the instant she does. She'll eventually learn that she gets what she wants - attention - only when all 4 feet are on the ground.

Dogs usually bug people when they're eating because they've been fed people food from the table. If you're doing that, you need to stop. Again, put her in either a sit or down and tell her to stay. If she won't - simply don't allow her in the kitchen at meal times. Put her in her kennel, put up a baby gate, but keep her out.

The nice way to stop the jumping...a squirt gun or spray bottle...when she jumps, squirt/spray her and tell her firmly "GET DOWN". Or the mean way...step on her back toes when she jumps (especially on people) but make sure you still firmly tell her to get down. She needs to be taught to sit, stay and lay down on command. Check your local humaine society. Sometimes they give obedience classes fairly cheap.

As far as the hair goes, if you want her to look like the breed is supposed to then you will have to put up with the hair. Otherwise, you have th option of shaving her down like a puppy during high shedding season.

Best of luck. Remember, be patient with her, training takes time. Reward the good behavior with lots of love.
