he is really itchy around his tail area. and i know that vitamin e is good for skin, hair, nails etc. so i was wondering if it would be ok to pop a few of the capsules open and spread it over his food when it's time to eat.

Even people can do harm to themselves by taking too much Vitamin E. My dogs take a Vet approved fish/flax oil capsule that had a small amout of Vit. E. in it.

It sounds like your dog may be reacting to a flea or two (if you have him on a flea prevention topical treatment, because they are not as effective as before) because of where your dog is itching at.

I also sprinkle Brewer's Yeast over their food. It's great for skin and coat. Everything I give my dogs has been approved by their Vet.

If the itching persists, you might need to switch the topical flea prevention product you use. I have had to do that. If the itching causes sores and hair loss, then get your dog to a Vet so the sores don't become infected or in case it is a mite problem.

No, this is not safe at all - far better to find out why your dog is itchy, might be his anal glands are full and he is scratching, could be a food allergy.

Assuming your dog is on flea preventative and flea free, I would recommend a good dry kibble like Canidae chicken and rice, that is targetted towards skin and coat health.

Excess Vitamin E, in the amounts you are contemplating giving your dog can cause nerve damage and a number of other health risks - don't do it.

You want to find the root of the problem instead of trying to cure the symptoms. Switch his food or check for fleas.

If you're giving fish oil, you need to SUPPLEMENT with Vitamin E. Vitamin E acts as a sort of natural preservative and prevents the oil from becoming rancid in the body.

Yes you can give your dog Vitamin E. But what works better than Vitamin E in "Fish Oil" pills. Fish oil works well for dogs who have skin problems.

EDIT: I do also give my dogs "Mega Pet Daily" vitamins by Azmira as well as the fish oil pills. But i only give the fish oil pills every couple of days.

Vit E is ok but I would check with your vet to make sure it's just dry skin first. Also you can combine one vit E tablet with one Omega 3 fatty acid (fish oil) it makes there coat healthy aswell as there skin. Also fyi giving the two together can increase sperm production in males.
